The Proper Care and Maintenance of your candles is very important, 'for our candle purchasing customers' please feel free to PRINT & KEEP A COPY OF THESE TIPS/INSTRUCTIONS & REVIEW AS NECESSARY - or to hand out with your candle gift ~ as safety should always be 'the' #1 first priority when using (any brand) candle product in your home. With that in mind - first, please use common sense at all times; then here are some important guidelines to think on before you light a candle ...
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
NEVER 'ever' leave a candle burn in a room unattended. Open flames need to be Maintained, Watched & Tended to with care - a stove, a candle, a fireplace, even campfires, (for instance). Safety is first priority, and ONLY YOU CAN ENSURE YOU & YOUR HOME'S SAFETY by watching & maintaining your candle at all times. ...Do not leave a candle burn in a room unattended...
Before burning your candle, wax or gel, trim the wick to no more than 1/4 inch to prevent the candle from smoking, burning unevenly or from producing unwanted soot on the jar. Keep your candle away from drafts. If the flame starts to burn too high or erratically, 'carefully' extinquish (recommend using a 'candle wick dipper) - allow the candle to cool completely (the wax/gel will be totally reharden), and then re-trim the wick before relighting. If your container ever shows signs of black soot this is a sign that your candle HAS NOT been maintained/tended to properly; your candle wick was too large when you lit it, and/or the candle was burning for too many hours - which results in the the wick becoming excessively large again.
DO NOT allow wick trimmings or any foreign matter to accumulate in the candle as it can catch fire !
Tip (s): With a COLD candle, you can turn the jar upside down to trim the wick, allowing any debris to fall out into your trash bin. Try using the large 'nail' clippers to trim your wick with ease. Use large kitchen matches or the long candle lighters to light your candle easily (when it gets lower in the jar for instance).
Always put candle containers on a heat resistant/fireproof surface/pad. Doing so will ensure you do not damage your tabletop from the 'heat' from your candle. Meadow Lodge Candles (tm) and many gift shops offer 'holders' for glass or tin container candles.
DO NOT PUT your candles in the sun or in extreme heat - THEY COULD MELT, it is simply the nature of candles. A candle may fade if left in strong light for extended periods of time. Store your candles in a dry, cool and dark location when not in use.
Tip (s): If you need to get melted wax out of your 'votive' container - put the container into the freezer for 5-10 minutes, take out - turn over - tap out the candle wax. Very easy and no mess ... Never wash a candle container in your sink, as wax residue will go into your drain, and will eventually clog up the pipes.
We do NOT recommend reusing a jar candle's container for 'refills' - it may produce unwanted results with refilled jars (jars can become heat stressed and will become damaged at some point in time, therefore not recommended for safety reasons). Use the jars isntead for storage of other products, such as craft items, beads, nails, bolts, dried flowers for potpourri, etc. (See our picture of our 32oz Country Candle Jar filled with scented potpourri and a decorative candle shade - click here --> (Picture Coming Soon!).
If you have children or pets in the home or visiting you: Keep your candles far out of their reach and therefore away from accidental bumps, or wagging tails.
Keep candle(s) AWAY from anything that is flamable, including curtains, paper products, magazines, etc. !!
Tip (s): Candles Have a Memory = When burning a jar container candle for the first & second time 'minimum' (we would recommend every time) - let it burn long enough to allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge of the jar and to achieve an 'even' melt pool of about 1/4 inch 'minimum'. This allows the candle to melt consistently with each successful lighting (versus having it tunnel and hang up on the container). The approximate industry guide is: measure the diameter of your container , and burn the candle 1 (one) hour for every inch. Our candles do not hang up on the jar, and we're posting a picture here of some of our jars - click here ->> (New Webshop Design ~ Picture Coming Soon!).
Example:
Do NOT burn our 8oz & 16ozs Country Jar Candles for instance, for more than two (2)hours and our 32oz Country Jar Candles for no more than three (3)hours, MAXIMUM.
We generously fill our candle jars and we ask that you leave approximately 1/2 an inch or up to 1 inch of "UNUSED" WAX IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR JAR CANDLE. Your candle is done at this time for a safety 'precaution'. ***  AND with our candle company, our jars are generously filled to begin with.  *** If you burn any jar candle all the way down to the glass bottom, 'you' can cause the glass to overheat and possibly break, and/or the wick may fall on the side of the glass (again possibly breaking/shattering it !) Votive Candles should always be burned in an appropriate holder - our votive candles MUST BE used with an appropriate fitting small flower pot type glass votive holder...
Gel Candles: DO NOT burn when gel reaches 1/2 inches from 'any' embed (the exception is : 'wax' embeds.)
Extinquish all candles very carefully, using either a 'candle wick dipper', or a 'candle snuffer', depending on candle type. These items are normally in stock and available through Meadow Lodge Creations (accessories page). For those who 'blow' out their candles, it can be dangerous with sparks and also hot wax spatters, if you insist on that method, try the industry tip of putting your finger up to your lips and gently blow ,,, it may help to dispurse some of the force / but note that we're big fans of safety and in using the proper tool to extinguish the flame/candle.
Tip (s): WICK DIPPERS: Use a wick dipper, dip wick into the wax to extinquish the flame, and 'then restraighten the wick' in it's proper position and allow your candle to cool. When using a wick dipper you will not experience one bit of smoke, in your room that you just scented with your candle :) :) :)
