Old World Cottage Industry versus a Factory Assembly Line. Our candles are not machine processed or sitting out in a warehouse for extended periods of time. We are a family run business, ensuring more 'attentive' detail and care is put into 'each candle' we sell - how ? ----> There is no machined 'production line', by choice. Each candle is handpoured & handcrafted with our custom blended time proven recipe, and using only the very finest of ingredients. With our custom blended recipe, you receive a candle that burns evenly, is long burning and is most definately richly scented. Our customer's are the first to tell us those facts. We DO NOT 'warehouse' our candles; we strive to keep a very 'small' quantity on hand to fill only the anticipated orders (estimated on our regular customers' ordering trends as well as seasonal demands) - and we many times fill orders as they are received ~ ~ this ensures YOU, our valued customer, in always receiving fresh handcrafted and hand-poured richly scented candles.
Do you use LEAD Wire Core Wicks ? NO ! The United States Candle Industry 'VOLUNTARILY' agreed a long long time ago to pull any product that contained lead wicking, and also agreed not to use or sell candles with lead wicking. It is next to impossible to obtain lead wicking these days (from a candle manufactured and sold in the United States.) You have an 'excellent' chance that any candle that is BOTH 'made AND sold' within the United States of America - that contains a wire core wick - is a candle most likely utilizing a ZINC core wick. Zinc Core Wicks are FDA Approved !!! Meadow Lodge Creations has NEVER USED LEAD CORE WICKS. We also continiously monitor the candle industry for any changes within our industry or for any new products that are approved for use in different applications. We will never take our safety -or yours- lightly. Zinc Core Wicks are FDA approved ~ and are necessary in container candles because they burn AT THE PROPER TEMPERATURE *WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR USE WITH CONTAINERS, (a very important FACT here) * Also these wicks are rigid and made to stay upright and therefore away from the sides of the container, another safety factor. Other styles of candles we sell may also have cotton cored wicks as well, and these are also FDA approved. No LEAD WICKS are used in Meadow Lodge Candles...
Why use Zinc core wicks ? Again, due to three very important factors: One is, wire core wicks burn at the proper temperature for 'glass/ceramic type container' candles, and this is a necessity for CONTAINER JAR CANDLES, for safety precaution. The second reason - CONTAINER CANDLES NEED and are designed to have A LARGER 'MELT POOL' for scent throw, but without the metal core to hold up the wick in this larger melt pool of wax, it could essentially 'sag' and your candle would snuff itself out. It would 'defeat' the purpose of having a container candle. The third reason - with any 'potential' sagging or leaning of wicks against your 'container, THAT becomes a hazard as your 'container candle' can crack due to the extreme heat from the flame leaning against the wall of the container. That is why you are instructed to always keep your wicks straight and centered, especially if they are bent when you extinquished your candle and to stop burning your candle with 1/2 to 1 inch of unused wax in the bottom of your jar.
Does that mean all metal wicks on the market today are safe, and do not contain lead ?
NO... Not all candles on the 'store shelves' containing metal wicks, are made/manufactured (factory assembled) in the United States!!! Many of them are from foreign manufacturer's (those mass produced inexpensive imported varities that some of those large chain style stores 'may' be selling...), and the foreign countries do not have to 'voluntarily' pull LEAD CORE Metal Wicks from their production lines. Also, there is no law against a United States retail store to have them pull such products and/or to refuse to sell the imported candles, some of which 'may' have lead wicking. So, YOU the customer, should be aware of this when making your purchases, if it is a foreign made candle, and it has a metal core, it would be recommended you make sure it's not a LEAD containing wick. We cannot speak for all companies, but we can speak for ours - MEADOW LODGE CANDLES (tm) never used nor will they ever use a LEAD Core Metal Wick in any of our candle products. At the present time, the metal core wick that is used by our company in our container candles, is, ZINC CORE and THIS IS A FDA Approved Wick purposefully intended for container candles, by design.
Is there a way to test if our wick is lead core ?
Yes. There is a simple test you can do:
